The Oct. 25 editorial “ Berger’s folly” wondered why Senate leader Phil Berger and House Speaker Thom Tillis would continue a seemingly futile fight against gay marriage in North Carolina. The answer is unfortunately quite obvious.
Gay marriage, along with immigration, is one of the strongest weapons in the GOP political bag of tricks. It is one of the Republicans’ favorite brushfire techniques to keep attention focused on non-issues. It also helps to explain why so many voters, many of whom stand to lose the most from GOP policies, continue to vote for them over and over again.
As long as Republican candidates can keep their less-informed voters worried about gays getting married, God being taken out of the schools and Mexicans crossing our border, they will pay no attention to their shrinking income and how little they really matter.
