In regards to the Oct. 17 news article “Riders fear loss of Crabtree trails”: There are two items that need to be discussed.
First, at a time when there is a health epidemic in this country (obesity), why would we allow an outside group from New Jersey to come in and tell us what we need in this area? My guess is they have never been to either entrance to the park on a week night or weekend when it is nearly impossible to find a parking space.
Second, mountain-bikers being able to ride on the trails in the 5,000-plus acre Umstead State Park is only partially true. The 30-plus miles of true single-track trails in Umstead are not multi-use trails; they are restricted to hikers/joggers only. Bikers are limited to the “fire” roads in the park.
I am hopeful that we can start to recognize the benefits these resources provide to the community and that all parties can work together to keep and even expand access to all the trails in this area.
Never miss a local story.
