Regarding the Nov. 4 news article “ Driver charged in Raleigh fatal crash deported before”: It’s a tragedy for the families of the victims.
If I were a family member, I would have one question for the police, politicians, ICE and N.C. State Employment agency: Where did Guzman work from 2006 to 2014?
I hear much noise about closing the border. Yet illegal immigrants are working here, raising families, paying rent and buying food. Unscrupulous employers are reaping a premium from employing illegal immigrants and enjoying a competitive advantage over employers using legal workers.
I propose we aggressively neutralize this advantage with business forfeiture or catastrophic fines on those individuals responsible. If illegal immigrants cannot find work, they are less likely to spend the money to get here (over and over and over again).
Ignoring the shadow economy supported by illegal immigrants corrupts our argument supporting legal immigration and allows employers to underpay, underinsure and generally abuse illegal immigrants. And we perpetually undermine employers of integrity. We have all these agencies looking the wrong way. Start with our own backyard. Penalize the employers.
