Regarding the Nov. 11 news article “ Bishops try to calm wave of anxiety”: If anyone is anxious about recent statements by Pope Francis on the direction of the Catholic Church, it is most likely the United States bishops and not the majority of Catholic laity. Pope Francis is simply restating the true mission of Christianity.
For decades the U.S. bishops have devoted their energies to creating and defending many questionable doctrines that have had the result of alienating thinking Catholics and of driving many of them away from the church. Left to themselves, the U.S. bishops have seemed incapable of halting this downward spiral of behavior.
In effect, Pope Francis is now offering U.S. bishops a “get-out-of-jail-free card” that allows them a face-saving way of abandoning their old, destructive behaviors. The bishops, if they choose, can simply embrace and promote this refreshing redirection of the church modeled by Pope Francis and become part of an exciting new adventure in Christianity.
Catholic nuns who were reprimanded not long ago by the bishops for their singular focus on works of charity and for not supporting the bishops’ political agenda were ahead of their time in this much-needed reform of church direction. We are truly blessed to have a religious leader like Pope Francis.
