Regarding the Nov. 15 news article “ Fracking rules finalized”: This is the season to be thankful. The Mining and Energy Commission’s rules make that difficult for the residents of North Carolina. Fracking in our state has not caused groundwater contamination, not a single illness, explosion or death – yet. However, the MEC is ushering in a year where all these blessings will come to an end.
The MEC ignored common sense, ignored science, ignored the voices of residents but listened carefully to the wishes of the oil and gas industry. Anyone attending MEC meetings heard the refrain “we can’t adopt that rule or the industry would never come to North Carolina.” Thousands of residents spoke out, and over 200,000 comments detailed the weak health, air and water protections. The MEC evaded almost every single objection.
Look around at the beauty of our state. Realize there is still time to stop fracking before it begins.
