Regarding the Dec. 1 news article “ Wake schools policy may ban selfies”: So the Wake County school board thinks “selfies” are a headache? Pandora’s box has just been opened!
Just wait until the board has to deal with the headaches and potential lawsuits related to vicious cyber-bullying emanating from school-owned computers as well as from student-owned smartphones and tablets. At least forensic experts can trace the cyber-bully to school computers by using the school’s Wi-Fi address and the computer’s specific IMEI. And the school officials can see a list of users recorded on the hard drive of that specific computer.
However, when malicious emails come from student-owned phones and tablets, there is no current way to identify the bully. If student-owned computers are to be encouraged in the schools, it will become imperative for the user to register the computer’s associated identifying IMEI with the school system in order to monitor and ascertain that only appropriate usage by students occurs.
Big Brother indeed, but necessary in the “Brave New World”!
Never miss a local story.
