Regarding the Jan. 9 column “ The gas tax we need”: What a shock! Charles Krauthammer and I actually agree on something.
Krauthammer and I both want a tax on carbon-based fuel with the revenue returned in equal shares to the population so low-income and middle-class people don’t carry the main burden of shifting our economy to more sustainable energy.
We differ on details. He appears to want a tax just on gasoline. I want it on all fossil fuels and greenhouse gases. He sets the tax at $1 per gallon of gas. I’d start at $15 per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent emitted and increase it $10 per ton each year. He would return the revenue by adjusting existing taxes and transfer payments.
I like the proposal by Citizens Climate Lobby ( citizensclimatelobby.org) for a monthly payment. Details can get sorted out. First, we need broad public agreement to tax carbon and return the revenue to the people in equal shares.
Never miss a local story.
When people as far left as I am and as far right as Krauthammer agree, that idea has started to really move forward. Onward!
