As a veteran North Carolina public school teacher who is using a textbook written in 1998 to teach a group of high school students about the problems associated with the “Gilded Age,” I would like to thank Sen. Thom Tillis for his recent comments concerning hand washing by employees who work in the food service industry.
His statements helped me make connections with the past in an overcrowded classroom with outdated materials due to the lack of funding that his leadership left behind.
With Tillis’ words, my students finally understood why people like Teddy Roosevelt called for a more “progressive” government. Yes, a Republican president saw the evils of corporate America that had run a-“muck”! The Pure Food and Drug Act along with the Federal Meat Inspection Act helped to create an environment in the marketplace where the American consumer received a “square deal.”
Again, thanks to Tillis for the lesson plan!
