Assigning simplistic grades to schools based on student test performance is a transparent device to denigrate schools with a large proportion of students from low-income (mainly nonwhite) families.
The ultimate purpose: resegregation by legal means. Create a system in which affluent (mainly white) parents can avoid having their kids in schools with the riff-raff, without having to foot the bill for private schools. So we have “school choice,” charter schools and vouchers for private schools. It’s popular with the privileged (mainly white) parents, so the GOP has adopted it. It has nothing to do with improving education for all, only with political pandering to prejudice.
As a kid, I went to watch my father vote in Alabama in 1944. The ballot had columns with candidates from the two parties, with an icon at the top for each party. The Republican icon was some kind of patriotic shield. The Democratic icon was a rooster with a banner in its claws, reading “White Supremacy.” Today that banner belongs under the Republican icon.
