I found Ed Chaney’s Feb. 14 Point of View “ A matter of libertas, not liberals” somewhat disappointing and deficient. He stated emphatically that the missions of our universities require that they be bastions of free thought and expression. Yet he did not emphasize that the professors who teach at these universities need to practice these same principles while in discussions with their students.
I am reminded that my daughter, a 3.5 GPA student who went to the University of Michigan, a liberal university similar to UNC, commented in the classroom on a political statement from her English professor and was given a D for her final grade even though she had all B’s on the exams. When she challenged the D grade and asked to see her final exam, the professor refused to see her.
I hear stories of this happening at our bastions of libertas throughout the United States.
