It is tragic that our state government underestimated the potential of Hurricane Matthew, which produced 30 deaths, unbelievable flooding, power outages and loss of homes. All of us will need to pay for this with increased taxes or with lower budgets for things we value such as public schools, which are expecting a 3 percent decrease in spending in 2017.
Meanwhile old levees and dams are failing because of a lack of funds for improving them.
Then I see Gov. Pat McCrory on TV every day thanking all of his people for doing such a great job. I suspect that the many thousands of people who have lost everything would not agree with him.
