I am writing to express my dismay at the possibility that Republican representatives are planning to pack the North Carolina Supreme Court by adding additional unnecessary justices during the special session on hurricane relief.
This would be adding to the size of our state government for no reason. The money would be much better spent helping our North Carolina residents and small businesses to recover from this disaster and get the economy moving in the eastern half of our state.
I can see no reason to do this except to influence the judicial branch toward perverse ideological interpretations of our laws. The voters spoke on that issue during the election and this kind of move insults the obvious message they sent.
Lawmakers need to leave the court alone and do their job of helping the victims of Hurricane Matthew during the special session that was called for that named purpose only.
Why have many lawmakers, like Nelson Dollar and others, remained silent on this proposal so far?
