Once we had signs, “Whites only.” Now it seems we need a new sign, “Straights only.” North Carolina’s latest step into an odorous pile is House Bill 348. Supporters of both of these signs claimed religious freedom to do what? Segregate.
Interesting how the religious faction claims it all goes back to the founding of our nation. What the founders realized was the religious systems were interested in controlling the hearts and minds of the people, whether they wanted them or not.
In Virginia before the Constitution, it was necessary to belong to a religious organization in order to serve in the state government. Fortunately, the framers protected religion from government and vice versa.
That wonderful statement of separation of church and state evolved. We have a right to practice our religion as we see fit.
Never miss a local story.
But more and more religionists are trying to press their beliefs into public, nonreligious organizations such as public schools. And now some religious folks want to discriminate in every forum possible.
If the bill passes, we should vocally, physically and with the power of almighty dollar use our vote to send those who designed and support it out of the statehouse.
