Recent letters to the editor submitted by our elected officials have resulted in my not knowing whether to laugh or cry! Do our honorable legislators truly believe the tripe they spout or are they simply spinning the party line?
For example, in the May 29 letter “Real sales-tax relief,” Rep. Paul Stam cherry-picked numbers in an effort to explain a very complex tax cut versus tax increases and show that recent tax policy benefited the working class. Absent in his argument is the totality of tax changes and an objective analysis of whether the entire system benefits higher versus lower socio-economic groups.
Just as perplexing was the letter “Health care freedom” from Rep. Chris Malone who “hopes” Republicans will step up once Obamacare is declared unconstitutional to restore “freedom” of choice whereby Americans can decline health insurance. Does Malone honestly believe that our health care system will function more efficiently when the uninsured can elect to receive “free” emergency health care at the expense of the insured?
Political dogma offers nice platitudes and sound bites, but such intellectual laziness is incapable of addressing the very real practical problems of the governed.
