Regarding J. Peder Zane’s Aug. 12 column “Imagining a world without Blue Cross”: It was a pleasure to see Zane, the usually conservative columnist, come out in favor of a government-run, single-payer health plan. We on the left have been proposing such a plan since before he was born!
We may disagree on details – How much should individuals pay? Should the government subsidize health screenings for high blood pressure, breast and colon cancer, and other measures that save health care dollars in the long run? – but a system of socialized medicine, with the government taking over major health care costs and eliminating the health-insurance company middlemen, would certainly rationalize the system and save money for all.
I can only assume that Zane will endorse Bernie Sanders, the one presidential candidate who has proposed such a system.
