You were right on target with your Aug. 30 editorial “Save Medicaid from wrong ‘reform’.”
As former president of the American Academy of Pediatrics (2002-03), I witnessed first-hand your observation that, “The performance of managed care companies has ranged from disappointing to disastrous.” These companies are best described as managed “cost,” not managed care.
Community Care of North Carolina has correctly focused on community-based, high-quality, coordinated, cost-effective care for more than a decade with impressive results for both services and cost as documented in reports through the state auditor’s office.
The North Carolina program of public-private partnership is admired and envied by other states. Any disruption of carefully nurtured networks of care risks irreparable system breakdown. The stakes are high. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!
