The Dec. 8 Road Worrier column “Transit plan addresses both urban and rural” clearly outlined the boondoggle being foisted upon taxpayers once again by politicians who continue to spend our money extravagantly. He showed the breakdown of the funding.
However, the residents who will vote on the sales tax referendum next fall need to realize the true sources of the funding: $962 million from the increase in the sales tax – source: the taxpayer; $720 million from the feds – source: the taxpayer; $512 million from bonds repaid by ... the taxpayer; $95 million from increased car registration fees – source: the taxpayer; $41 million from rental car tax – source: the taxpayer; $14 million from state bus funds – source: the taxpayer; $112 million from fares – source: the riders.
Yikes! The riders’ share is 4.5 percent of the total. That means as we drive by a bus, we can look at a rider on the bus and think, “I’m paying 95.5 percent of his fare.” Something’s not right here.
