Regarding the March 1 news article “Tension follows fatal shooting by police”: For a long time, I thought, “Please, don’t let it happen in my city.” And then it did: A Raleigh police officer shot and killed a black man, Akiel Denkins, who was a father, a son. I’m outraged that another young black man was killed by police.
I’m tired of a police culture that prioritizes arresting someone over protecting a life. And as a white person, I am fed up with other white people not speaking out against racism and white supremacy.
In an election year where the leading GOP candidate refuses to disavow the KKK, we white people cannot sit back and be quiet. We must speak up and act against hatred and racism. If not now, when?
We cannot afford to lose one more black life to state-sanctioned violence. Akiel Denkins matters. Black lives matter.
