I want to thank Robert Merriam for his accurate and evidence-based information in his Feb. 8 Point of View “The intersection of money, guns and politics” about guns in America. I have one thing to add.
Former chief justice of the Supreme Court Warren Burger (a Nixon appointee) made the following statement about the interpretation and use of the Second Amendment to justify the gun lobby’s agenda for unfettered gun ownership: “This has been the subject of one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word ‘fraud,’ on the American public by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime.”
Until the 2008 Supreme Court decision in Heller vs. D.C., the Supreme Court had considered the matter four times and had never found a Second Amendment right to individual gun ownership.
Even the NRA, on the wall of its building’s lobby where it has emblazoned a portion of the Second Amendment, has conveniently edited out the critically important words “well regulated militia.”
Never miss a local story.
