Wake County schools are absolutely right to aim their students at a college education, but the whole job shouldn’t be laid on the shoulders of our teachers.
Families without a single college graduate to advise and encourage their students need help, and help is available from College Summit. Every summer, this Washington-based program organizes weekend workshops around the United States where professionals coach rising high school seniors in writing the personal statement required as part of most college applications.
College Summit also works to station peer counselors who can continue motivating next year’s seniors to follow through with their college applications.
First, though, parents and school administrators have to seek out a partnership with College Summit (collegesummit.org). How about a little help for our teachers?
