Regarding the July 2 news article “Wake voting in flux; maps ruled illegal”: Finally our federal system of checks and balances has quashed the North Carolina legislature’s attempt to gerrymander Wake County local elections.
The residents of Wake County did not ask for our school board or county commission districts to be redrawn, nor did the legislature ask for our input when doing so.
Sen. Chad Barefoot, in particular, should be ashamed of his barefaced attempt to undo the will of the people he claims to represent, an attempt that cost taxpayers thousands of dollars. But the courts have spoken.
Now it is up to the Board of Elections to go back to our original method of allowing us to choose our local representatives. And it will be up to the residents of Eastern Wake County to choose a new senator to represent them in the General Assembly in November.
