Why so few participate

Your May 8 article "Plan offers a check on seniors drugs" left me feeling more helpless than my vote on Tuesday.

I called the phone number (866-922-6247) in the article and was informed by a very nice gentleman that two stores in Garner were the two nearest participating drug stores to my home. I called one of them, and a gentleman advised he had never heard of the program. I called the other, and a woman told me she had no idea what I was talking about. I attempted to inform her, and she became agitated as she could not understand what I was talking about.

I then started to read the short newspaper article to her, and she told me she was going to hang up the phone if I did not stop reading the article. I did not stop, and she hung up.

I am 68 years old, and I hope my younger years were more respectful to people who creak when they walk. I can understand why only 2 percent of 500,000 eligible state residents have taken part.
