Regarding your May 9 article "Easley supports college for aliens":

Aliens may attend U.S. universities and colleges. They have always had that right.

In fact, we recently read in The News & Observer that there were upward of 550 Chinese students at Duke University alone.

Alien applicants to U.S. universities and colleges need to meet all entrance requirements for a school; in addition, their admission is conditional on their obtaining appropriate visas to study in the U.S.

Of course, it may be difficult for illegal alien residents of the United States to comply with the law.

For example, on their applications for student visas, they will be asked whether they have ever failed to comply with U.S. immigration laws. An honest answer might very well keep them from obtaining visas.

It is rather telling that federal immigration officials stated that university officials need not report students in the country illegally "except those who have visas."

It would appear that our law enforcers are prepared to be completely ruthless against those who try to comply with our laws and, at the same time, are completely indifferent to those who break our laws.
