Gov. Mike Easley has released his final budget recommendations for this year's short session of the General Assembly. Instead of thanking hard-working state employees and their families for their commitment and dedication to the state, he slapped us in the face with an embarrassing 1.5 percent cost of living increase.

After pushing through a tax decrease last year for the state's wealthiest residents, Easley had the audacity to suggest that our corrections officers, teacher's assistants, juvenile and adult probation officers and other state employees are not worthy of more. It's obvious that Easley does not care about working families in this state. All of us, regardless of political loyalties, should be ashamed of the disregard Easley has demonstrated during his eight years in Raleigh.

Easley needs to explain how we are supposed to shove five days of personal leave down our gas tanks while trying to pay $3.76 per gallon just to get back and forth to work. While he's at it, he needs to send an e-mail to our retirees so that they can decide how to buy both food and medicine on the 1.2 percent COLA he offered them.
