It's interesting what people consider "hip." In your June 2 A section, I learned many young people find it hip to donate $10 for an insecticidal mosquito net that could save someone from malaria in a developing country.

In the Life, etc., section on the same day, I learned some people find it hip to spend anywhere from $8,000 to $100,000 on a Birkin bag. That amount of money could save 800 to 10,000 lives from malaria, which kills an estimated 1 million people a year.

Maybe these handbag shoppers could learn a lesson in the new meaning of the word "hip."
