Three cheers for the remarkable potters of Seagrove! Sixty-nine of 79 resident Seagrove potters have unified to create their own pottery festival rather than be subject to an organization that has failed to represent their interests.

Your June 26 article suggested, however, that the North Carolina Pottery Center and the Museum of Traditional North Carolina Pottery have equal standing. Nothing could be further from the truth. NCPC is the pride of potters across the state and the envy of potters elsewhere. NCPC effectively advocates on behalf of a craft that is central to the state's cultural identity, it has a permanent display of historic and contemporary Seagrove and North Carolina pottery, has had 50 first-class exhibitions in 10 years and has an active educational program.

By contrast, the museum is itself a misnomer, for it does not have a collection, has no curatorial staff, offers no programming and does not even represent the potters of Seagrove, let alone the potters of North Carolina.

I encourage the good people of North Carolina to attend the Festival of Seagrove Potters this fall and visit the North Carolina Pottery Center. It is a jewel in the crown of the North Carolinas cultural heritage.
