Regarding public editor Ted Vaden's Aug. 31 column "Pluck the duck": "Nakedly political"? And Doonesbury isn't? And "Curtis" isn't when they have their Democrat haircut convention? And "Candorville" isn't just about every day? Do the same people complain about those? Is Vaden so biased that he can't see that these complaints result because readers think it's unfair when their liberal orthodoxy is being gored?

Why didn't Vaden even mention the obvious choice of just leaving "Mallard Fillmore" right where it is on the comics page with those other political cartoons?

The fact that "Mallard Fillmore" strikes fear in some liberal readers only means it's effective at hitting the mark. You have one conservative comic strip. Does Vaden really think that is so unfair and so unbalanced that even that one has to go?

If The News & Observer is so far left that you don't even have the backbone to run one conservative strip, then you have surrendered any shred of even the pretense of being either fair or objective.
