Regarding the Sept. 10 article "Alumni carry the day, save Broughton's lawn": As a teacher at Broughton High School, I find great amusement in all the hoopla regarding the potential paving of the school's front lawn.
Does the community not realize that one half of the lawn was paved over 10 years ago? You probably did not know that because the company did a great job in camouflaging the parking lot with wonderful landscaping. Thus, the integrity of the building remained.
If the city, county commissioners and Wake County schools go through with a proposed parking deck/lot in Fletcher Park, will those opposed be happy when the Broughton lacrosse team, which uses the park, moves to the hallowed front yard and erects nets and fences? That to me is when the integrity is lost.
We all hate that Broughton is a "land-locked" school. We tolerated the trailers and are pleased they are now at least in the back parking lot. But Broughton is not a front yard, a building, a parking lot or a trailer. Broughton is Broughton because of the students and faculty who have walked the halls for almost 80 years. When I retire, that is what I will always cherish. The memories are what makes Broughton so special. Would the alumni not agree?
