We were disappointed in The News & Observer's Oct. 10 endorsement of Republican Paul Stam over Democrat Ed Ridpath for N.C. House District 37. This endorsement appears to be based on a perception that Stam is "tough and his criticisms sometimes irritate the House leadership." While "irritation" from the minority leader may encourage partisan rancor, it does not provide the representation that residents in his district deserve.
As a candidate, Ridpath has worked hard to understand issues of concern to this district. He supports responsible growth that protects small businesses and growing communities while preserving agricultural and wooded lands. By contrast, Stam's record demonstrates unbalanced support of developer interests and lacks creative solutions to infrastructure needs that come with uncontrolled growth.
While Ridpath may be a "thoughtful progressive," he is not progressive in a fringe sense; he is someone who will apply common sense to the legislative agenda. His willingness to listen to constituents -- independent, conservative or liberal -- and then strive to develop an effective community response is truly refreshing. We in Southwestern Wake County don't need a critic in the N.C. House. We need a representative. We need Ed Ridpath.
