On their way to snatch up bargains at Wal-Mart, shoppers trampled a man to death. And thus these people usher in the holiday that is supposed to honor Christ. I wonder at the appropriate sentiment for gifts purchased at so great a cost: "Merry Christmas, enjoy, oh, by the way, I helped kill someone to get this"?

Authorities may never be able to identify or prosecute those most responsible. But the people who actually stepped on a fellow human being and were too crazed by greed and raging materialism to stop -- they know who they are. And so does God.
