Your Oct. 11 article "Cocaine case is the buzz of UNC" should not have mentioned the death of Courtland Smith or the sanctions levied on Delta Kappa Epsilon. The subject of cocaine use is entirely unrelated to the situation surrounding Smith's death.
The reality is that a pervasive culture has developed on college campuses across this country that makes drug use and binge drinking acceptable among student body populations. Recent arrests at UNC-Chapel Hill have confirmed this. However, to target the UNC Greek community, and attempt to imply a link between a nationwide problem and a tragedy involving a single fraternity is simply irresponsible.
Instead of lumping stories about cocaine use and the tragic death of an honorable and talented young leader together, perhaps you should try to focus on the positive. You might want to take a look into the proactive steps that the university and members of the UNC Greek community are taking to improve student life and ensure that a culture of drug use does not continue to pervade campus life.
