Voting for reform

close xAs a retired truck driver, I want to thank U.S. Reps. G.K. Butterfield, Bob Etheridge, Brad Miller, David Price and Mel Watt for helping seniors in North Carolina by voting for the House health care bill.
They had the courage to stand up to the big insurance lobbyists and vote for a bill that closes the doughnut hole coverage gap in Medicare Part D, helps early retirees afford coverage, assists families with the costs of long-term care and creates a pro-consumer public alternative to private insurance plans.
We owe Butterfield, Etheridge, Miller, Price and Watt a debt of gratitude for making it easier for Americans of all ages to see a doctor and get a prescription filled.

Give him a medal
Dr. Earl Sunderhaus should be getting a commendation for telling the truth ("Blunt doctor gets in trouble," news story, Nov. 20). If a patient does not want a doctor to tell her she is fat, she ought to lose weight! There is no right to not be offended. -
A better deal
The writer of the Nov. 14 People's Forum letter captioned "Involuntary speech" did not see anything honorable in Bob Hall's Nov. -
Leg it to school
As we begin a conversation on community schools, I would encourage the Wake County school board to also consider the infrastructure necessary to allow our kids access to these community schools by walking or biking. -

Objections to public funding of political candidates typically rely on the specious claim that it will force individual taxpayers to provide financial support to candidates they don't agree with. -
Safe passage
Not long ago I was on a business trip in Columbia, S.C. My hotel was on one side of a busy street and restaurants were on the other.
