A prize for all

The Nobel Committee actually did reward the president's success and not just his intentions.

Haven't you noticed how all of a sudden the U.S. is the "good guys" again? There has been a total shift back to the way America was regarded during the Clinton years and back to World War II.

Have you forgotten already how the U.S. under the last administration was seen as the cowboy bully that couldn't care less what the world thought of what it was doing in Iraq?

We've passed that stop

President Obama is about to make a serious mistake in the possible prosecution of individuals associated with the Bush-era policies on interrogation and torture. Although the policies might have been less than what this country stands for, prosecution at this time will not move this country forward, only backward.

It is time to put that behind us and move on with the task at hand, rebuilding our economy and our safety and standing in the world at large. This is a distraction that could derail us more than help us.

Proud of president

At the recent International Festival, I bought a T-shirt that displays every country's flag with the slogan "Citizen of the World." For me, President Obama's receiving the Nobel Peace Prize celebrates that sentiment.

I have read the Nobel Committee's statement on its reasons for bestowing that honor, and the president's humble, articulate and profoundly thoughtful response. Ours is the most powerful nation on Earth, and our leaders have great influence on the course of world events. Obama's vision, which he began developing long before the 2008 campaign, has been one of diplomacy, really listening to all points of view, concern for what humanity can do to halt environmental damage and reducing the threat of nuclear weapons.

That his inauguration was greeted with such jubilation by his supporters around the world is a testament to the hope and optimism we feel his vision expresses. The Nobel Peace Prize is an affirmation of the impact his vision has had on the world psyche.

No 'jackpot' there

I have been surviving, so far, the attrition of your formerly exceptional newspaper, with every sympathy for your plight. However, I was greatly disappointed to read the headline on your Oct. 10 editorial "Obama's jackpot," announcing what should have been a measured piece on the importance of a Nobel Peace Prize, both to the world and to the president of the United States. The Nobel is, after all, not a lottery or a poker game.

Does this represent the start of a new National Enquirer mentality we'll be exposed to from now on?

11 days of peace?

Since the nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize closed after President Barack Obama was in office only 11 days, how could even those who said he deserved it be believed?

The Nobel Prize once again has lost respect. Many people believe Obama received it as a rejection of our previous president who freed the people of Iraq and kept our country at the forefront of those seeking peace throughout the world -- a position we have had for many generations.

Obama has done nothing and especially did not do anything in his first 11 days in office. President Reagan and Pope John Paul ended the Cold War yet didn't receive the award. It seems like the committee votes only for Democrats. Can the media tell us what Obama did in his first 11 days to get the award?
