Regarding your Nov. 20 editorial "Healthy debate," your readers would have been better served if you had responded to concerns the public has rather than repeating what Sen. Harry Reid has stated.
There was no mention that this bill, similar to the one passed in the House, is twice as large, over 2,000 pages, as previous versions. Were you at least curious what necessitated doubling the size?
You could have read through the legislation and pointed to the vagueness, the failure to indicate exactly what the public can expect if Congress passes health care reform.
You could have even pointed to the cost on businesses that fail to comply, or how much will be taken from an individual's paycheck for failing to have health care coverage.
You could have mentioned that a public option would not be administered by a private insurer as federal health care programs are.
You could have also told your readers of the Republican amendments, including removing state barriers from insurance carriers, that Democrats would not include.
This would have been a great opportunity for you to honestly evaluate this legislation, something the public counts on independent newspapers to do.
