An unfortunate cut

Regarding your Nov. 21 article "Cuts bring distress to Meredith campus," it is indeed a shame that the budget ax should cut into the flesh of academic programs at Meredith. True, in this matter we are not negotiating peace in the Middle East, but the recently discontinued French program is nonetheless of vital importance to current and prospective students and to Meredith's image in the world.

At the time of the 2003 invasion of Iraq and "freedom fries," the program in French reached an historic low. Subsequently, it has grown. Since the ad hoc committee began its program review in Spring/Summer 2009, until today, the number of French majors has nearly doubled, from eight to 15. At least three new majors have signed up just recently.

This is a high quality, "high-touch," outward-looking program that regularly sends students, independently or in small groups, for study abroad in France or, quite recently, in Senegal.

In addition, since the early 1990s nearly 30 young French and American women have participated in an exchange of graduate teaching assistants between Meredith College and the Université Catholique de l'Ouest in Angers, a program that has contributed immeasurably to their personal and pre-professional growth.

With English, history and philosophy, French is a vital cog in the liberal arts wheel at Meredith College. Yet the French major was officially discontinued last month.

The college's strategic planning statement calls for graduates who are engaged global citizens. Last month's action deprives prospective students of the opportunity to pursue their passion in a productive, growing program, and effectively slams shut this portal to the wider world.

It is true, as your story reported, that - given budget woes - numerous informational meetings are being held. It also seems certain that, no matter the arguments we make or the figures we produce, Meredith College will heedlessly lower a productive, exemplary program into the ground.
