closeI am writing about the editorial July 10 on the real estate home tax. It implied that the real estate industry is greedy and cares only about commissions. You mention that money going to education is being glossed over by our industry trying to fight this tax.
Something needs to be done to have more money for growth, but making Realtors look greedy (yes, I am a Realtor) is not fair. What if they proposed a journalism tax just on the cost of newspapers? Your price would go up, and your salaries would go down because fewer people would buy your paper. Would you write about that?
I agree that more money needs to come from somewhere, but I do not believe taxing the equity on someone's home is the way to do it. What is hard to take is certain institutions looking at our industry and saying we are greedy when we try to defend ourselves. It is not ultimately about our commissions. It is about homeowners losing their equity.
