In regard to the Aug. 13 letter "Call them thieves" opposing down-zoning in older neighborhoods:

The writer does not seem to have a grasp of community and what it means to be a good neighbor. Neighborhoods developed 30 or 40 years ago with an established character should be protected. That's not to say folks shouldn't improve their properties, but should they do it to the detriment of their neighbors' quality of life and the general character of the neighborhood?

Community: people living together under the same government with a common interest. Is it in the interest of these older communities to damage their intangible value? Views of trees, cross-breezes, talking to your fellow homeowner "over the back fence" ... this is incalculable.

For those who value calculator over character, those who don't care about the shade of trees and open windows, for those who prefer to spend life inside and anonymous -- think before bringing your opposing values to an established community.

Raleigh has what many other cities envy: a wealth of older neighborhoods that are an aesthetic touchstone to our past and, potentially, an example of good will and community living for the future. Call them visionaries.
