I am deeply alarmed at the U.S. government's use of torture in Iraq, in Guantanamo, Cuba and other CIA detention centers ("Interrogation methods barred," Aug. 20, news story).

Why does the Bush administration use the war on terrorism as an excuse to curtail civil liberties and to justify the use of torture?

As a taxpayer and a U.S. citizen, I do not want my money used to fund interrogation techniques that include torture. It is time to close these centers of torture.

The United States used to be known for our support for human rights around the world. We seem to be losing our idealism and our soul.

I ask Sens. Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr, what are they doing to stop the use of torture by the U.S. government? What are they doing about the use of the Patriot Act to curtail civil liberties?

It is long past time to close interrogation centers in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Iraq and around the world.
