As much as we all love living in the Triangle, we all recognize that it is changing. Our open space is disappearing at a rate of 35 acres per day or 1 1/2 acres per hour as we add up to 100 citizens to our county each day.
The best insurance policy we can buy to protect our quality of life and water quality is to vote "yes" to the $50 million Wake County Open Space Bond on the ballot Tuesday. These funds will continue our program started in 2000 to protect stream buffers, watersheds and lakes, as water quality is the number one priority for these funds.
We have partnered with most of the 12 municipalities in Wake to purchase, on a 50/50 basis, open space, park and greenway land that each municipality has identified as important. All lands purchased with these funds are on a voluntary basis from willing land owners, and a citizen oversight committee helps ensure that dollars are spent wisely and according to our mandate. So a "yes" vote for the Wake County Open Space Bond might be the best thing a citizen can do to ensure that our water quality is maintained and our quality of life is preserved for generations to come.
