Why the furor over the admission of 340 able students into the community college system? As an immigrant myself, having been naturalized as a minor with my parents, I am appalled at the expressed views of all the candidates who are running for governor of North Carolina.

It is my understanding that the students pay more than the cost of their educations since they are being charged out-of-state tuition. Why then this punitive and short-sighted approach by all the candidates? The state should reward these students for their good grades and hard work, rather than punish them for actions not committed by them but by their parents.

Let us not hide behind the shibboleth of "immigration reform." Let us listen to Gov. Mike Easley's words when he said exclusion of these students is destined to build a weaker North Carolina.

Let us live up to our state's toast, which states "where the weak grow strong and the strong grow great." We are supposedly "the goodliest state under the sun." Let us make those words ring true for us all.

Come on, candidates. Show us your better natures. The students and we, the voters, deserve no less.
