Regarding the Feb. 16 article "Abortion remark angers students":
Since the birth of my son with Down syndrome 11 years ago, the vast majority of parents I have met have expressed the sentiment that, although having a child with Down syndrome can be challenging, it has enhanced their lives.
There are people who argue that babies with Down syndrome should be aborted because their quality of life is diminished. Despite my son's many challenges, his quality of life is far better than the majority of people in this world. He enjoys swimming, watching TV, playing on the computer, wrestling with his siblings, going to the beach and devouring food like a typical adolescent boy.
There are people who argue that babies with Down syndrome should be aborted because they will be a burden to society. It's impossible to know anyone's potential before they are born. Some people with Down syndrome have jobs and more would, given the opportunity. Most parents try to ensure that their child with Down syndrome will be provided for.
The value of someone's life shouldn't be based on IQ or physical capabilities. Perhaps the greatest lesson God has taught me through my son is to truly love my neighbor as myself, even a neighbor who believes I should have ended my son's life before he had the chance to live it.
