I am writing in response to the June 17 column "$4 gas, plus toll? Maybe not" that called into question the General Assembly's efforts to provide funding for projects like the Triangle Expressway. In a time of $4 gas, projects that reduce delays and congestion are just what drivers in our state need.

There are already over 5,000 miles of tolled roadways in our nation, helping to more efficiently get commuters to jobs and goods and services to businesses and consumers. Tolled highways reduce congestion and wasted fuel and pollution, and offer drivers an opportunity to spend less time behind the wheel. As with almost every commodity we use, we pay for toll roads based on our consumption of them. For those who prefer not to pay, there are toll-free options available.

By providing gap funding, the General Assembly will help speed completion of a vital project for the Triangle. Contrary to popular belief, the Triangle Expressway is a toll project and is therefore not competing with other much-needed transportation projects for already strained funding.

This should be a simple decision. Provide start-up money for a badly needed project that will finance itself and reduce congestion and pollution.
