Unstable currency, decaying transportation systems and myriad social problems - we do have a lot to be thankful for this holiday season.

But to make a fair comparison, remember that Thanksgiving is based upon the survival, against tremendous odds, of the Pilgrim refugees at Plymouth after their first year in the New World. These wretched few (half of 100 or so had died) had good reason to give thanks for still being alive after enduring the winter of 1620-21 on that cold New England shore.

Upon arrival, the Pilgrims, tired and exhausted after many weeks on wintery seas, found no welcoming committee, no hotels or housing awaiting them. Nor were there any shopping malls, food stamps, unemployment compensation or emergency services. There were no cell phones, grocery stores, or any form of public transportation - only Indian and animal trails.

Things that we take for granted as our rights - our public schools, fire departments, police protection, water systems, indoor plumbing - were utterly lacking. Constructing shelter meant assembling it from raw timber, stone and mud. To put a point on it, there were not even grist mills to grind the grain that the immigrants didn't have.

Only the newcomers' own faith, and the kindness of the Native Americans in sharing their meager stores, teaching the sick and starving Pilgrims how to fish and hunt and how to gather native foods, berries, roots and nuts, allowed these early immigrants to survive a desperate winter.

Perhaps, despite our woes, it's time we paused long enough to look on a brighter side, giving thanks for our caretakers and toys while pondering what we have done to deserve all those wonderful things that we somehow insist are our due.
