The attention in North Carolina political circles is turning to the Democratic presidential contest and the race for governor on both sides.

But Democrats will also pick someone to take on Republican U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole, who is seeking a second six-year term.

Democrats were unable to persuade some of their better-known figures -- including Gov. Mike Easley and Attorney General Roy Cooper -- to take a run at Dole. But five others are seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate.

State Sen. Kay Hagan of Greensboro and Jim Neal, an investment banker from Chapel Hill, have the most active campaigns.

Three others will also be on the ballot: Duskin C. Lassiter, a self-employed truck driver from High Point; Howard Staley, a podiatrist from Moncure; and Lumberton lawyer Marcus W. Williams.

Dole faces primary opposition for the Republican nomination from Pete Di Lauro of Weldon.
