SMITHFIELD -
Johnston County will receive more than $3.7 million in loans and a $225,000 grant to improve its water systems, according to an announcement Wednesday by U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole.
"It is so important that communities have the water infrastructure they need to support residents, sustain current industries and foster economic growth," Dole said. She said the money was approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development.
According to Rural Development, Johnston County will receive a $3.5 million loan to buy an additional 2 million gallons per day of water capacity from Harnett County to help meet growing water demands.
In addition, the Hopewell-Pisgah Water District in Johnston County will receive a $235,000 loan. The $225,000 grant will be used to build approximately five miles of water line.
