Amy Carson of Asheville, left, and Angela Medlin of Cary confer at the Legislative Building. Carson and Medlin, both mothers of autistic children, were supporting House Bill 1364, which would force North Carolina to provide only mercury-free vaccines for infants, children and pregnant women. Carson and Medlin think their sons' disabilities were caused by childhood immunizations that contained a mercury-based preservative. The link between mercury and autism has been debated for years but has not been proved. Carson and Medlin huddled together after a House committee meeting.
