| From left, Gerry Cohen, director of bill drafting, Kevin Howell, a legislative liaison, and Roberta Stavredes, assistant enrolling clerk for the state legislature, hustle bills to the governor's office. Before the ink dried Thursday on about a dozen bills, including the 156-page state budget, legislative workers passed the package off to the governor's office. "[Former] Gov. Hunt used to drink lemonade with me when I handed in the budget," said Cohen, a veteran at the legislature. Gov. Mike Easley was not around to share a cool drink with the trio but they left the paperwork for his staff. Easley's office has not yet announced when or whether he will sign the $18.9 billion state spending plan into law. | |
