| John Muth portrays George Washington during a performance at the State Capitol by the Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps of New Bern. The weather and umbrellas didn't spoil the mood or the performance recalling 1791, when President Washington visited North Carolina on his Southern tour. The event Wednesday included teens dressed in period costume playing 18th-century British and American tunes. Onlookers needed umbrellas, and Robin Simms provided cover for the president. In the 1791 visit, Washington stopped in Wilmington, Salisbury, Salem and New Bern, the former state capital. Raleigh was established a year later. | |
