Dot Barber, a legislative assistant to Rep. Ray Rapp, a Democrat who represents Haywood, Madison and Yancey counties, gets a surprise visit Friday. The guest was Ronald McDonald, the iconic fast-food clown who was making the rounds to invite the legislators and their staffs to the luncheon outside catered by McDonald’s. “It’s been quite a change in our menu over the last few years,” said Cheryl Hunter, owner and operator of McDonald’s restaurants in Smithfield and Selma. “We are showing the legislators what we are doing both at restaurants and how we are involved in North Carolina in using the local Goodness-Grows-in-North Carolina products.”
