The General Assembly would create a new legislative office designed to regularly review the work of state departments, agencies and institutions in a bill given final approval Monday night.

The Program Evaluation Division also is designed to point out proposed efficiencies in state government by making unannounced visits to state offices to examine their work, deciding whether programs align with an agency's mission and recommending changes.

The Senate agreed unanimously to the House version of the bill, which now goes to Gov. Mike Easley for his signature.

A 16-member House-Senate committee would oversee the work of the new division.

The National Conference of State Legislatures had recommended the change to a new special state Government Performance Audit Committee.
